Clinical Extern

Grand River Hospital

This is a Contract position in Hamilton, ON posted October 5, 2022.

Union: Non-Union

Location: KW Campus 

Work Type: Temporary Part Time (Multiple Positions Available)

Contract End Date:  Approximately 4-6 Months

Shift:  Non Union – 8 & 12 Hour Shifts; Availability Required for Days, Evenings, Nights, Weekends, Stat Holidays

Summary:

Clinical Externs can be clinical learners in nursing, respiratory therapy and paramedic programs. Externs are unregulated health care providers and will work as part of an interprofessional team under supervision of regulated health care providers. This is a paid position as part of the Ontario Government’s Enhanced Externship Program. Externs will be placed in the  KW Float Pool and Freeport Float Pool. 

Qualifications:

  • Nursing students enrolled in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or in their final year of a Practical Nursing (PN) program OR
  • Paramedic students in 2nd year of an approved Paramedic Program OR
  • Respiratory Therapy in their 2nd and 3rd year of a training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy Education, which is administered by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists
  • Medical students finishing their undergraduate degree as MD or have graduated with MD degree and will be starting their Residency 
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work as an effective member of an interprofessional team
  • Good attendance record
