Clinical Terminology Specialist

Your Opportunity: The Clinical Terminology Specialist is a member of the Clinical Terminologies team in Health Information Management.

An understanding of applied informatics, clinical documentation workflow and the value of codified data within Connect Care is required.

Clinical coding experience with International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Canada (ICD-10-CA); International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM); and Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI); and ideally working knowledge of SNOMED CT preferred.

This position is located on site at Sheldon Chumir Health Centre in Calgary and is classified as a P3.

Description: Position requirements include but are not limited to: Applying standardized tools and processes for intake, selection, development, implementation, maintenance and versioning for classification and/or clinical terminology work products.

Assigning codes to clinical terms and/or cross mapping between classification and/or clinical terminology standards with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

Validating third party vendor clinical terminology content consisting of clinical terms, codes and code descriptions.

Submitting and managing change requests to a third party terminology content vendor.

Collaborating with Connect Care and other teams on creating, maintaining and retiring terminology content.

Documenting processes and workflow.

Successful completion of post secondary education in Health Information Management, Health Informatics or a health-related field in an organization of significant size, scope, complexity and diversity plus appropriate certification, licensure or recognized designation, required.

An understanding of the clinical and administrative uses of SNOMED CT with successful completion of course offerings through SNOMED International or post-secondary education with certification in Terminology Standards, preferred.

An appreciation and understanding of the design of classifications and reference terminologies and their applied use in clinical information systems with an initial primary focus upon ICD-10-CA, ICD-9-CM, CCI and SNOMED CT.

Familiarity with domain-specific classifications and clinical terminologies is an asset such as lab, nursing, allied health, etc.

Additional Required Qualifications: Intermediate to expert skills in Microsoft Office including Excel with table management and manipulation.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with the use of vFire for issue intake, management and resolution.
