Early Childhood Resource Specialist

Hamilton Health Sciences

This is a Contract position in Hamilton, ON posted August 2, 2022.

Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitation (DPR) is a portfolio within McMaster Children's Hospital. It is comprised of many different programs providing out- patient services to children (and some adults) with developmental, emotional or behaviourial, physical, or communication needs. DPR provides habilitation/ rehabilitation services to children with neurological and/or developmental disabilities from birth to school leaving age. The team offers assessment, treatment, and consultation services through a variety of service delivery models.

The Early Childhood Resource Specialist (ECRS) is a consultant to the community for preschool aged children with communication difficulties. Collaboration with community services regarding integration issues, skill development, and education is required. The ECRS will support the inclusion of preschoolers with communication needs in the community and will support advocacy for children with special needs. The ECRS is also available to the families to provide in-home consultation support regarding implementation of interventions and addresses each child's learning, play and behaviour. The ECRS on the team may provide intervention within the home/childcare setting. The primary focus is on communication but also takes into account other developmental areas including play, social and behaviour. The ECRS will participate in the development of clinical services including parent education workshops and quality assurance activities.

1. Early Childhood Resource Teacher Certificate and registration with College of Early Childhood Education
2. Diploma in Early Childhood education or a university degree in Child Studies
3. Current First Aid certificate
4. 2 years E.C.E. experience working with children with a wide range of communication difficulties
5. Maintains a current membership in the Association of Early Childhood Educations, Ontario (AECE,O)
6. Excellent knowledge of child development in all areas, including communication development and behaviour
management
7. Good knowledge of community programs and relevant agencies
8. Demonstrated ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team
9. Good communication skills
10. Willingness to participate in a criminal reference screening process
11. Fluency in French will be considered an asset
