The McMaster Children’s Hospital Hemodialysis Unit supported by the Pediatric Nephrology service, provides care for children with end stage renal disease and other acute conditions. Hemodialysis care is provided to outpatients within the Hemodialysis unit or coordinated with inpatients including within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The service involves an interdisciplinary team working within a family-centered care environment.
The primary focus of this position is to provide hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis treatments, and nursing care to pediatric hemodialysis and nephrology patients in a variety of settings. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the RN will be involved in both direct and indirect care of children who require hemodialysis. This will include assessment and implementation of patient care plans in the inpatient and outpatient settings. As a member of the interdisciplinary health care team, the RN uses clinical expertise and knowledge of children and families, disease processes and related issues to plan patient care and evaluate clinical practice across the continuum of care.
Monday to Friday; days, evenings, weekends, on call as needed
1. Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses on Ontario
2. Successful completion of a Pediatric Hemodialysis training program and completion of Pediatric Hemodialysis competencies. This includes the dialysis process and nursing care of the end stage renal disease patient on maintenance dialysis with direct pediatric hemodialysis experience
3. Completion of a Nursing Nephrology Course
4. Minimum of 3 years recent pediatric experience in the last 4 years in a tertiary care setting with children who have nephrology conditions
5. Experience working in inpatient and outpatient pediatric tertiary care settings with pediatric hemodialysis
6. Current BCLS and PALS certification
7. Competence in hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis including home teaching
8. Demonstrated teaching skills including adult learning principles
9. Demonstrated skills in vascular access including bloodletting with children of all ages
10. Demonstrated expertise in working within an interdisciplinary team
11. Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in caring for pediatric nephrology patients and their families
