McMaster Children's Hospital’s (MCH) Child and Youth Mental Health Program (CYMHP) is one of Canada’s largest pediatric mental health service providers. Mandated to provide care for both local and regional patients, CYMHP offers a wide range of services for children, youth, and families experiencing complex mental health concerns. Our program includes emergency mental health services, a 22-bed inpatient unit, a day hospital program, and outpatient services.

Affiliated with McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, and the Offord Centre for Child Studies, CYMHP delivers world class care supported by world class scholarship. The Registered Nurse (RN) functions as a valuable member within both the CYMHP inpatient and emergency mental health services, providing care to children and youth with complex mental health issues. The registered nurse is key in leading patient care, including assessment of risk, mental status examination, crisis management, establishment of effective therapeutic relationships, utilization of developmentally appropriate approaches to care, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic interventions, and coordination of services. The RN offers mental health teaching to patients and families, demonstrates knowledge of all Ontario legislation that guides mental health care and is responsible for meeting the medical needs of clients, including medication management and education. The Registered Nurse contributes to new and ongoing research, quality assurance projects, and provides consultation/liaison to caregivers and community agencies.

1. Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
2. Canadian Nurses Association in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing designation (CPMHN) required
3. Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
4. Evidence of minimum 1 year, acute child and youth inpatient mental health experience within the past two years
5. Demonstrated skill in effective crisis management
6. Demonstrated knowledge of child and youth mental health services
7. Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacology
8. Demonstrated knowledge in developmental psychology and psychopathology
9. Demonstrated knowledge of the mental health act, substitute decisions act, health care consent act, Personal Health Information Protection Act
10. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and establish therapeutic relationships with clients and team members
11. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
12. Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning
13. Evidence of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and flexibility
