Registered Nurse – Virtual Nurse-to-Nurse Support Line

This is a Contract position in Hamilton, ON posted January 12, 2023.

Reporting to the Manager, Virtual Care, the Virtual Nurse’s primary role is to support the Virtual Nurse-to-Nurse (n2n) Support Line, a temporary initiative under the virtual care program. The virtual n2n provides on-demand support to nurses (RNs and RPNs) in medicine units across HHS, providing an experienced Registered Nurse peer to call for any questions or support. The virtual n2n will act as an additional resource predominantly after-hours, when staffing models are strained and floor resources are limited. 

The virtual n2n program provides remote support for RNs and RPNs across HHS by acting as a thought partner, coach, and experienced peer colleague. Related support includes but is not limited to:
1. Non urgent patient condition changes, including problem solving, assisting with assessments steps, walking through information gathering, and identifying appropriate escalation pathways;
2. Navigating patient responses, including problem solving to determine alternate care options;
3. Assisting with interpreting medication administration, medication titration, or unclear orders;
4. Reviewing and interpreting non-critical lab or test results and problem solving/advising on next steps;
5. Navigating and advising on HHS policies and procedures; and
6. Identifying appropriate escalation pathways (i.e. to MD or Director-on-call) and support calls as appropriate in 3-way calling.

The Virtual Nurse will also support other virtual initiatives under this program, such as the Virtual HomeGIM Clinic, as required.  This includes but is not limited to providing outpatient virtual care with internal medicine patients, communicating with internal medicine and family practice physicians as MRPs of HomeGIM patients, all preparation, documentation and required follow up, and care coordination and support to patients and their families. 

This position may be eligible for a hybrid or remote work arrangement, in accordance with HHS’ Remote Work Policy.


Salary: 34.24-49.02
