Unit Summary

6 South is a fast paced 35 bed unit. There is a 6 bed step down with cardiac monitors. The units care for a variety of patient populations including: orthopedic, digestive diseases (surgical and medical), trauma, ENT, and urology patients. Patient acuity is high with a quick patient turn over.

Position Summary

As a member of this interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse collaborates to provide both pre and post operative care to adult patients population cared for on the unit. Additionally, the Registered Practical Nurse supports the specialized day-to-day needs of patients who have experienced a traumatic injury of various origins through provision of care in the acute phase of the care continuum.

Qualifications

1. Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
2. Current Medication Administration and Asepsis certificates
3. Current certificates or current community college studies in asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, patient assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, medication administration, IV administration and IV management, transcribing physician orders
4. Current Heart and Stroke Foundation BCLS certification or equivalent
5. Completion of Physical Assessment Course
6. Recent experience (2 years) in an acute adult surgical unit
7. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, high turnover environment
8. Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
9. Demonstrates critical thinking and decision making in assessment, problem identification and problem solving
10. Ability to prioritize and collaborate with the team when the patients condition changes
11. Evidence of commitment to professional practice and ongoing professional development
