Unit Summary

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHSC) is a community of 15,000 staff, physicians, researchers and volunteers that proudly serves southwestern Ontario residents through its network of seven hospitals and a cancer centre. We are the only hospital in Ontario that cares for all ages, from pre-birth to end-of-life. Our data is diverse, complex and large, with tremendous potential to support continued improvements in patient outcomes, and operational and financial efficiencies. Our agile team works in a fast paced and collaborative environment, integrating data from disparate systems across all areas of hospital operations (financial, labour, clinical and operational), modelling and visualizing data in news ways, and creating advanced predictive and prescriptive analytical models. This is an excellent opportunity to develop and show-case your business analysis and data visualization expertise, while helping HHSC to continue improvements in operational excellence, financial stewardship and ultimately, best care for all.

Position Summary

You are enthusiastic about data, and can envision how data can support decision making to enable operational efficiencies and to improve patient outcomes. You are an outgoing communicator and adapt seamlessly to the different needs of stakeholders at all levels of the organization (executive through front-line staff). You prefer a collaborative team environment, you share your knowledge and expertise freely and you actively support other team members in achieving project goals.

You are detail oriented, skilled at eliciting requirements, and can extract and manipulate data for profiling and quality assessment from a variety of data sources. You have created effective reports, visualizations and dashboards using complex and diverse data leveraging modern BI Tools (we use Tableau).

The successful candidate will:

  • Work with stakeholders to elicit, analyze and document requirements and use-cases for projects as assigned;
  • Identify and document business rules for data, and the relationships between attributes and entities;
  • Use SQL to extract data for analysis, profiling and data quality assessment;
  • Become a subject matter expert and support the technical team to implement requirements as identified;
  • Create retrospective and prospective dashboards using Tableau to support decision making;
  • Participate in deliverable acceptance, rollout and stakeholder education;
  • Contribute to establishing best practices for requirements gathering and the visualization of data;
  • Share your expertise and mentor and motivate other team members;
  • Provide input to project plans, status updates, and estimates; and
  • Identify, document and mitigate or escalate project risks.

Schedule Work Hours Monday to Friday, 9-5 (some flexibility) with after hours or weekend work as required.


  • Undergraduate degree or diploma combined with equivalent experience.
  • Certifications in business analysis, data science, statistics, or a Master’s Degree are beneficial assets.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience as a Sr. Business Analyst (BA).
  • 3+ years experience on a data-centric project, using a modern BI Tool (we use Tableau).
  • 2+ years of healthcare industry expertise preferred.
  • Expertise in advanced requirements elicitation methods, such as: Document Analysis; Focus Groups; Interface Analysis; Usage / Work-flow Observation; Value Stream Mapping; Data Profiling and Data Architecture Analysis.
  • Expertise in advanced documentation techniques, such as: Unified Modeling Language (UML); Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN); data-flow diagrams (DFD); control flow diagrams (CFD); A3 or other lean methodologies; Gantt, PERT or other project plan notations; Integration Definition Language (IDEF0 / IDEF1X).
  • Proven skill accessing and manipulating data from diverse data sources using SQL, Power Pivot, Power Query or other common tools and a familiarity with data model techniques sufficient for data profiling and data quality assessment.
  • Strong communication skills and exceptional social skills; proven record of successfully interacting with staff at all levels on complex and technical topics.
  • Knowledge of Ontario healthcare data flows, partners, related regulations / laws (i.e. PHIPPA) and healthcare standards for data encoding or transmission is an asset.
