Unit Summary

The Population Health Research Institute (PHRI), a joint institute of Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University, with over 300 employees working directly with 60 researchers. PHRI conducts clinical research internationally in 101 countries and is a world leader in large, global health and population and health outcomes research. Our capacity to conduct multiple international studies concurrently, with tens of thousands of participants in each, is a capability very few organizations in the world can match.

Position Summary

1. Review and provide input into research study protocols
2. Develop and design materials to assist in conduct of study, including informed consent form templates, recruitment materials, manual of operations, training material, etc.
3. Liaise and coordinate with internal departments (e.g., contracts, ICT, statistics) to ensure requirements and timelines are achieved as required
4. Support the PI in the identification, development and organization of required study committees (e.g. Steering, Event Adjudication, DSMB); including the design of charters
5. Monitor study management plans throughout project and revise as necessary
6. Control for risk identification, risk mitigation and issue resolution for the research study
7. Prepare and present reports, abstracts, posters and academic manuscripts
8. Ongoing management of data collection and validation systems, processes and associated documentation
9. Development of research study budgets, in collaboration with Finance, PI and PM and confirm ongoing adherence to study budget; Negotiate budgets with vendors, sites and national leaders
10. Provide leadership, coaching, training and mentorship to study team members; manage the performance and workload for study team members
11. Develop targets and timelines for deliverables, anticipates potential delays and proactively develop strategies to achieve a positive outcome
12. Primary point of contact for internal (e.g., PI, PM, other PHRI departments) and external (e.g., investigator sites, sponsors, study committees, CROs, vendors) stakeholders
13. Represents the research study team at program and other organizational meetingsOther duties as assigned
14. Negotiate and resolve conflicts among study team members
15. Other duties as assigned

Schedule Work Hours

Monday – Friday 37.5 hours/week.


1. Minimum 5 years’ experience in multi-centre research studies and the management of large clinical research datasets
2. Undergraduate degree in sciences or health science and a clinical research certification (CCRP, ACRP or other post-graduate certification in clinical research).
3. Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
4. Excellent communication, problem solving skills and ability to work flexible hours
5. Knowledge of ICH-GCP Guidelines and international research requirements
6. Broad knowledge of research methodology, clinical trials and drug development processes
