Unit Summary

The 3Z/3C Pediatric Medicine and Intermediate Care Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH), the largest unit at MCH, provides inpatient tertiary, acute, and sub-speciality care to pediatric medical patients. Our newly renovated, state of the art department is a dynamic, fast-paced unit where specialized medical care is provided to children with complex medical care needs. The 3Z/3C Pediatric Medicine department at MCH takes an innovative approach to our orientation programs.

Position Summary

Through in depth psychosocial assessments, the Social Worker will identify child and family strengths, problem-solving abilities, dynamics, interactions, attitudes, feelings and cultural issues in relation to the child’s illness. The Social Worker will develop and implement a plan of intervention, which addresses coping, adaptation, compliance and quality of life. A variety of modalities including counseling, group work, consultation, case management, community outreach and advocacy will be employed. The Social Worker will work collaboratively with the health care team and identify and make referrals to appropriate supports and resources. The Social Worker will integrate research and practice.

Schedule Work Hours Monday to Friday; days

Qualifications

1. Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from an accredited School of social work
2. Clinical (3 to 5 years) experience (within the last 6 years) with children and families dealing with an oncology diagnosis, dealing with death and dying, bereavement issues and chronic progressive illness
3. Excellent communication and teamwork skills and ability to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team
4. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced changing environment
5. Knowledge of community resources and referral process and knowledge of research for this specific population
6. Demonstrated expertise in assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, advocacy and teaching
7. Proven ability to organize, prioritize, and problem solve effectively
8. Familiarity with Child and Family Services Act, Consent to Treatment Act, and Mental Health Act and other related legislation specific to role
9. Knowledge of family-centered care and proven role model
10. Qualified as a field instructor for social work students and demonstrated experience supervising students
11. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning

Should the successful applicant possess a Masters of Social Work (MSW) and provide proof they will be adjusted to the MSW rate to correctly reflect the level of education in accordance with the letter of understanding.
