Senior Manager, FTTH Access Network Engineering

Xplornet has ambitious plans to deploy fibre based services to rural Canadians and is searching for a technical leader to drive the architecture, detailed design and implementation of the network equipment powering these networks.

The Senior Manager
– FTTH Access Network Engineering will lead a team of telecommunications professionals delivering FTTH deployments nationally.

Your team is responsible for the end-to-end FTTH architecture and will work closely with the Network Engineering, IT, Product Management, and business teams to ensure that customer services can be efficiently ordered, provisioned, operated and maintained.

Your team will also partner closely with the Fibre Design and Construction teams in the specification of the physical plant that connects our customers and ultimately deliver the network equipment to light up these networks.

This position, and the FTTH Access Network Engineering team, will play a key role in defining the architecture and specifications for Xplornet’s next generation of hybrid fibre wireless networks, and the development of the competencies required to deliver these networks.

This position reports to the VP Fibre and IP Networks with a preferred work location in Markham Ontario.

Key responsibilities include:
• Guide the technical evolution of Xplornet’s FTTH access networks
– develop architectural standards for the selection and implementation of new and evolving technologies
• Work with the business teams in the development of customer facing products and services ensuring scalable deployments and cost effective operations
– as required, team will establish specifications for appropriate functional and non-functional product and service requirements
• Select equipment vendors and define device configurations enabling delivery of a high performance, resilient and scalable customer services
• Define architectural standards and select implementation technologies for Xplornet’s next generation of hybrid fibre wireless networks
• Ensure designs provided by the FTTH Access Network Engineering team are accurately documented (specifications, drawings, configurations, MOPs) and tested allowing for successful implementation, and ongoing operations by the IP Operations team
• Create project implementation plans and budgets and manage projects for successful on-time, on-budget delivery
• Collaborate with the IP Operations team in the definition of network performance management strategies, KPIs, technologies and related Network Management and Operational Support Systems
• Consult with industry peers and stay abreast of new technologies and industry standards and keep the Xplornet leadership team abreast of evolving technologies
• Guide and mentor the FTTH Access Network Engineering team and actively share knowledge and experience across the broader Network team
• Identify opportunities to apply new technologies to fundamentally change operational cost models The ideal candidate will possess:
• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or relevant industry experience
• Minimum 8 years of industry experience as an FTTH architecture or senior IP network designer in a service provider environment with at least 4 years of functional leadership experience
• In depth knowledge of service provider FTTH architecture options such as GPON, XGSPON and Active Ethernet
• Working knowledge of FTTH networking equipment from vendors such as Nokia, Huawei, Calix and Adtran
• In-depth knowledge Cisco IOS, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VPNv4, IPv4/IPv6 environments
– associated industry/vendor certifications would be an asset
• Knowledge of IP/Ethernet Quality of Service features such as classification, marking, queueing and shaping
• Extensive knowledge of fibre based networks with an in-depth understanding of the technical and budgetary implications and trade-offs associated with design decisions made at all network layers
• Working knowledge of Linux
– knowledge of Python, Netconf, Restful APIs, Yang and Jinja2 would be an asset
• Experience leading RFI / RFP process for new vendor / technology selection and ongoing vendor management
• Strong technical project management skills with an ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on projects/tasks to completion
• Experience working as part of a bid team responding to customer or government RFP
• Passion for building new competencies and processes enabling teams to grow and scale
• Attention to detail ensuring accurate network documentation and written standards are created for use by network peers
• Proven ability to break down barriers and foster collaboration across functions and teams
