INFECTION CONTROL COORDINATOR-Extendicare Assist Blackadar Continuing Care Centre

This position is available at a home/community affiliated with Extendicare Inc. The successful candidate would be employed directly by the affiliated home, not Extendicare Inc.

Candidates are invited to apply for the above positions to work at our Blackadar Continuing Care Centre, a 60 -bed long-term care facility, located in Dundas, Ontario.

RNs and RPNs are welcome to apply.

Reporting to the Director of Care, the RN or RPN will enhance the effective management and quality of nursing practice in keeping with the Standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario, Long Term Care Standards and Extendicare Standards.


  • The Best Practice Nurse is responsible for the implementation of the Infection Control Program within the organization that has been established and is overseen at the managerial level. The Best Practice Nurse is a Registered Nurse who functions as both a resource and change agent by providing support, clinical expertise and leadership to other healthcare providers, facility staff, management team, residents and families by:
  • “Champion” the program utilizing current Best Practice Guidelines
  • Liaison with Peer Groups and external Resources
  • Maintaining the Daily Infection Surveillance form and line listings
  • Outbreak management
  • Chair of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee
  • Management of resident/staff immunization program
  • Education and follow-up***
  • Ensure documentation is in compliance with Infection Control in relation to 24 hour report
  • Audits as required and scheduled including follow-up action
  • ***Monitors, tabulates and analyzes monthly infection control reports of residents and staff. Acting as the Infection Control Clinical Resource Nurse in outbreak situations, monitors isolation cases to ensure all departments are following proper procedure. Determines interventions required and implements same.
  • Completed Monthly Infection Prevention and Control Reports
  • Ensures the Home’s compliance by adhering to and maintaining the Standards of Practice, Policy/Procedures and Legislative Standards throughout the Facility by auditing, mentoring and coaching staff/residents/families and/or providing 1:1 teaching as issues arise.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of computerized charting including RAI-MDS; PCC; EMAR; POC
  • Participates in committees as required
  • Other duties as assigned based on the needs of the facility


  • Appropriate current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
  • Registration or eligible for registration with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.
  • Evidence of completion of Infection Control (8 Module-RICN Course) Course or in process.
  • Experience dealing with the cognitively impaired.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices, as well as Knowledge in Infection Control Practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with seniors.
  • Ability to work effectively individually and with others while prioritizing tasks to handle the most urgent first.
  • Ability to present information clearly and effectively both verbally whether in person or over the phone, and in writing; an active listener who projects a friendly demeanor.
  • Ability to collect and use information to thoroughly think through problems and situations; puts information from various sources together to see the ‘big picture’, and generate creative solutions.
  • Current knowledge and understanding of all legislative standards governing Long Term Care
  • Superb organization, planning, time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Working Hours: 0700 to 1500 but can be flexible to meet the needs of the facility when identified.
  • Proven experience in taking personal responsibility for seeking information from various sources, enables others learning through sharing experiences, coaching and mentoring
  • Current CPR
