As a Principal Ecological Planner within the Open Space Strategy unit of the Planning and Environmental Services branch, you will act as a subject matter expert and leader in ecological, environmental, and open space planning.

You will contribute to the protection, restoration, and enhancement of the City’s ecological network by playing a lead role in the development of open space plans, policies, strategies, and regulations.

You will provide subject matter expertise in the areas of urban ecology and environmental protection, and will contribute to spatial monitoring of the City’s open space network.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will: Apply advanced knowledge of ecological, environmental and open space strategic level policy planning, as well as expertise in current best practices in municipal service delivery for these areas Support the development of open space planning policy and strategy Lead the maintenance of the City’s ecological datasets and provide data driven analysis to support landscape-level natural asset monitoring and carbon accounting Complete spatial analysis as it relates to open space planning, ecological network protection, and carbon budgeting, to support the work of the unit and the corporation Manage open space projects through all phases, including scoping, contract management, and time and cost controls Provide technical advice on ecological, environmental and open space planning matters and support department and corporate level plan and policy development through advisory committees, written reports, and ad hoc consultation Participate on inter-departmental and branch teams to advance the City’s policies and strategies for ecological, parks, and open space planning, and support the incorporation of ecological policy and strategy as part of City projects and initiatives Coordinate detailed interdisciplinary studies and reports in support of plan and policy development Plan and facilitate internal engagement across relevant City departments to identify key issues and opportunities for cross-departmental coordination of land use planning, policy review, and land development Support the review of development proposals to ensure ecological, parks, and open space interests and priorities are consistently addressed Demonstrate leadership competencies to support the Senior Planner and section leadership in advancing team priorities Perform other related duties as required Qualifications : Bachelor’s degree in Botany, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Urban and Regional Planning, or a degree related to the functions specific to the position; a Master’s Degree in these areas is an asset A minimum of 4 years of progressively relevant and responsible experience, including ecological and open space planning, technical environmental review, policy development, and project management A strong understanding of ecological concepts and principles Knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental and open space planning, including knowledge of applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, and applicable governing policies and plans Knowledge of spatial data analysis and data management in the fields of landscape or conservation ecology; experience with data analysis and management in these fields is an asset The ability to communicate complex information effectively, both verbally and in writing The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners and stakeholders and appropriately engage the public Excellent time management and project management skills Knowledge of computer systems, including word processing and spreadsheets Demonstrated ability to manage high workload volume and competing priorities, while maintaining progress on complex projects and meeting established time frames Knowledge of statistical techniques and research methodologies, including quantitative and qualitative analysis, is an asset Experience in the development of environmental or land use measures and indicators is an asset Knowledge of ecosystem valuation, carbon accounting, or carbon modeling is an asset Experience using ESRI GIS software is asset Membership or eligibility for membership with one or more of the following professional organizations (or equivalent) is an asset: Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals; Alberta Institute of Agrologists; Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists; Canadian Institute of Planners Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style Demonstrate service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusiveness Demonstrate alignment with the Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, fostering an environment for others to do the same.
