Senior Financial Analyst

Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board

This is a Contract position in Hamilton, ON posted April 28, 2021.

The opportunity The Senior Financial Analyst will assist in the preparation of OTPP financial statements, audit and annual report.

Perform financial analysis and assist in the preparation of presentations to senior executives and the Audit and Actuarial Committee.

Responsible for subsidiary financial reporting including annual financial statement reporting in multiple jurisdictions, audit coordination, and presentation of statements to subsidiary directors as required.

Coordinate the month-end closing process of the general ledger.

Engage in operational improvement projects and initiatives related to financial reporting.

Who you’ll work with The role will join the Financial Reporting & Internal Control team within the Finance Division and will report to the Senior Manager, Financial Reporting & Internal Control .

What you’ll do Assist in preparing year-end and mid-year financial statements and notes for presentation to the Audit & Actuarial Committee.

Prepare accurate supporting information and schedules in a format that is transparent for internal review and external audit.

Perform financial analysis and prepare summary memo including year over year variances, comparison between financial statement presentation and policy portfolio presentation etc.

Obtain understanding of underlying data fields and manipulate data using pivot tables to generate financial insights.

Coordinate with external auditors in ensuring they receive information on a timely basis.

Review and document business logic embedded in key financial reports.

Research, propose and test changes to financial reporting business logic as required.

Ensure information in Ontario Teachers’ annual and mid-year reports is accurate and prepare supporting back-up file.

Support Financial Reporting aspects of security offering documents, rating agencies, and other users of financial data including ad hoc inquiries as required.

Support updating and maintenance of Ontario Teachers’ Accounting Policy and Auditor Independence Policy.

Research and prepare memos summarizing accounting treatment of various transactions and securities.

Consolidate and review peer funds’ financial information and prepare presentations on comparison of Ontario Teachers’ financial results to peers.

Subsidiary Financial Reporting and Management Prepare and review annual financial statements for a number of subsidiaries in various jurisdictions.

Work with external parties (and external auditors as necessary) to prepare subsidiary financial statements and review the financial statements produced and supporting information including legal agreements.

Coordinate external audit and regulatory filing process for audited entities including engagement letter approvals, board resolutions, audit support preparation and financial statements approvals.

Ensure timely communication on financial reporting matters including responding to regulatory filing and tax issues promptly.

Coordinate dividend distribution approvals and director resolutions.

Review subsidiary compliance with OTPP’s Auditor Independence Policy and prepare summary memos and presentations of compliance status to the Audit and Actuarial Committee.

Assist with the review of subsidiary auditor requests for proposal.

Month-end Close Coordinate the monthly closing process of the general ledger including related reconciliations between sub ledger, data extracts and upload files.

Liaising with relevant parties to clear reconciling items as required.

Liaise with internal departments and external suppliers, and other contacts Provide prompt and accurate service.

Respond to inquiries and requests from the Investment department.

Work with other internal departments to ensure efficient coordination of work.

Assist with the evaluation of the financial reporting implications of new investment products and initiatives.

Control Responsibilities Support annual risk assessment on internal controls and work with different teams in Finance to update control documents.

Coordinate joint walkthrough meetings with external advisor and auditor and support their control testing.

Other Participate in projects as required.

Support Financial Reporting aspects of other external reporting as required (e.g.

external benchmarking and other surveys).

What you’ll need A minimum of 3
– 5 years of post-professional qualification financial reporting experience including experience preparing financial statements for investment structures.

Preparation of presentations suitable for senior management and the Board.

Excellent use of MS Office products including: Excel
– pivot tables, power pivot, other data manipulation tools (e.g.

vlookup, sumifs) Powerpoint
– experience developing senior executive / board level standard of powerpoint slides.

Experience with visualization and business analysis tools (e.g.

Power Bi) Relevant university degree CPA designation is desired CFA designation is of benefit Understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Experience reporting under other accounting standards such as UK FRS and Canadian GAAP for pension plans is beneficial.

Understanding of investment products including publicly traded and privately-owned investments, derivatives, repurchase and reverse repurchase agreements.
